ChatGPT Atlas closes August 9. Nothing exports itself.
OpenAI is retiring its standalone browser after about a month's notice, and bookmarks, tabs, history and logins do not carry over to anything.
If you made ChatGPT Atlas your working browser, you have until August 9 to get your data out. OpenAI announced on July 9 that it is retiring the standalone Atlas app and folding browser-based agent work into ChatGPT itself. That is roughly thirty days' notice, and three days from now the app stops being something you can rely on.
What does not come with you
Browser data does not transfer automatically to another application. In practice:
- Bookmarks can be exported as an HTML file and imported into Chrome or another browser. This is the one clean path.
- Open tabs and history do not move. Save them as bookmarks or paste the URLs somewhere before the 9th.
- Cookies and active sessions do not carry over. Expect to sign in again everywhere, which means having your two-factor codes to hand.
- ChatGPT conversations are stored separately from browsing data and remain available. Those are not at risk.
Where the features went
OpenAI is moving agentic browsing into the ChatGPT desktop app — multiple tabs, downloads, navigation and signed-in access — plus a Chrome extension and sidebar, and browser automation inside Codex. Availability varies by region, device and plan, so check what your own subscription actually gets before you assume a workflow survives.
The security point is the real deadline
OpenAI's own guidance is that Atlas will stop receiving the security updates expected of a supported browser. A browser holding your saved passwords and session cookies is not a place to be running unpatched software. Uninstall it once you have exported.
The wider lesson
Atlas was free, so nobody is out of pocket. The cost was time — setup, bookmarks, habits, workflows built on an app under a year old. Before you make a new AI tool your default anything, ask what a thirty-day shutdown notice would cost you, and keep the parts you cannot rebuild quickly somewhere the vendor does not control.
Why it matters
There are three days left to export bookmarks and note your logins, and no automatic migration is coming. After August 9 the app is unsupported software holding your passwords and cookies.
