Stripe is buying OpenRouter, the meter on your AI spend

The payments company has agreed to acquire the model gateway many small teams route their AI features through, with no published commitment on fees after the deal closes.

Stripe has agreed to buy OpenRouter, the gateway a lot of small teams use to reach AI models. Stripe published the agreement on 19 August 2026. OpenRouter posted its own note the same day and said the deal was expected to close within weeks. If your product calls models through OpenRouter, your inference layer and your payments layer are about to sit inside the same company.

What OpenRouter is, and what the deal covers

OpenRouter puts one API in front of many model providers and handles the billing. Stripe's announcement puts the catalogue at more than 400 models from over 80 providers, and names NVIDIA, Zoom and Lovable among the users. The appeal for a small team is that you top up credits in one place instead of holding accounts and cards with every lab separately.

Stripe did not disclose a price. Press figures differ: TechCrunch reported a New York Times figure of about $7.5bn, of which $1.5bn goes to the founders, while Forbes framed the deal as above $8bn. Take the range, not a number. For context TechCrunch also noted OpenRouter was valued at $1.3bn in May 2026.

The part that touches your bill

OpenRouter's own documentation is specific about how it makes money. Card top-ups carry a 5.5% fee with an $0.80 minimum, crypto payments 5%. Token rates themselves are passed through with no markup. Bring your own provider keys and you pay nothing until $25,000 of list-price inference a month, then 5%.

None of that is guaranteed after the close. OpenRouter says "nothing about your integration changes" and that the name, product and roadmap stay put, but neither company published any commitment on fees. Acquisitions at this size are not usually followed by cheaper pricing.

What to do

Nothing urgent. The useful move is to make yourself cheap to move: OpenRouter speaks an OpenAI-compatible API, so keep at least one direct provider key working in a config flag, and export your usage history now so you can price a switch later. Then put a note in the calendar for your next renewal or top-up to re-read the fee page. If Stripe also processes your revenue, be aware that one vendor now sits on both sides of your margin.

Why it matters

If you build AI features on OpenRouter, the 5.5% credit fee and pass-through token pricing you budgeted against are now set by a company with a multi-billion-dollar purchase to justify. Keep a direct provider key working so a fee change is an inconvenience, not a rebuild.
